Chapter Sixteen

After they had bathed and dressed, Leda braided Seelie’s ash blonde hair. She was feeling sorry for the girl. How could she explain the power Senosai wielded? She barely understood it herself. And how could she make Seelie understand that they were in big trouble? They were prisoners here until the fire lord granted them leave.

Leda was feeling sorry for herself too. There was no way to get a message out to her Mother. And even if she could, she knew Mother was powerless to help her. No one defied the fire lord. Mother’s long-ago warning had the pall of an omen.

You read auras, sweetness. Don’t ever let Senosai know that or you will be his brood mare for life.

She shuddered. Mother had spent the last twenty turns keeping Leda safe from Senosai, and now she was within his grasp. Putting her wards up now was useless in this den of magic. If Mother couldn’t refuse him, what chance did she have?

There was a knock at the door. It creaked opened hesitantly, and Liam stuck his head in. “May I come in?”

Seelie didn’t wait for Leda to answer, instead rushing over to him and throwing the door open. “Come in, Liam.” Her face brightened when his eyes met hers.

Liam stepped through, holding something with two hands. It was covered with a heavy piece of burlap.

“Seelie,” he said, his face lit with excitement. “I…uh…”

Leda watched his aura change to bright blue. Love. She turned to Seelie and noticed her colors change too. The girl seemed to melt in his presence and her aura mimicked his.

“What did you bring us, Liam?” Seelie asked excitedly.

“Actually, this is for you, Seelie.” He looked over at Leda and blanched before turning away quickly. Liam smiled down at Seelie. “Seeing as how you’re waterborne, I thought you might like this.”

He uncovered the wrap and presented her with a small bowl of water with a silvery fish swimming around in it.”

Seelie squealed so loud, Leda thought her ears would burst.

“A fish!” Seelie cried in delight.

Liam put it on a table and Seelie scrunched down so she could watch the fish at eye level. He grinned at her. “Do you like it?”

“I love it. It’s beautiful.” Seelie looked up at him, her eyes glassy with tears. “No one’s ever given me such a wonderful gift.”

He shrugged, scuffing the bottom of his boot on the floor. “It’s nothing. We have a drudge here who’s waterborne. He’s collected a lot of these fish from a nearby pond and I had him give me one so you’d have a familiar for yourself.”

“A familiar,” she repeated. “Of my own.” Seelie stood up and kissed Liam on the cheek. “Thank you,” she whispered. A pink blush bloomed on her cheeks.

Knowing how shameless Seelie had been during most of this trip, it surprised Leda to see her so bashful around this young stud.

Leda walked over to the fishbowl and stuck her finger in the water.

“Careful, Leda! Don’t boil the poor thing to death,” Seelie cried out in a panic.
