Chapter Sixteen
After they had bathed and dressed, Leda braided Seelieâs ash blonde hair. She was feeling sorry for the girl. How could she explain the power Senosai wielded? She barely understood it herself. And how could she make Seelie understand that they were in big trouble? They were prisoners here until the fire lord granted them leave.
Leda was feeling sorry for herself too. There was no way to get a message out to her Mother. And even if she could, she knew Mother was powerless to help her. No one defied the fire lord. Motherâs long-ago warning had the pall of an omen.
You read auras, sweetness. Donât ever let Senosai know that or you will be his brood mare for life.
She shuddered. Mother had spent the last twenty turns keeping Leda safe from Senosai, and now she was within his grasp. Putting her wards up now was useless in this den of magic. If Mother couldnât refuse him, what chance did she have?
There was a knock at the door. It creaked opened hesitantly, and Liam stuck his head in. âMay I come in?â
Seelie didnât wait for Leda to answer, instead rushing over to him and throwing the door open. âCome in, Liam.â Her face brightened when his eyes met hers.
Liam stepped through, holding something with two hands. It was covered with a heavy piece of burlap.
âSeelie,â he said, his face lit with excitement. âIâ¦uhâ¦â
Leda watched his aura change to bright blue. Love. She turned to Seelie and noticed her colors change too. The girl seemed to melt in his presence and her aura mimicked his.
âWhat did you bring us, Liam?â Seelie asked excitedly.
âActually, this is for you, Seelie.â He looked over at Leda and blanched before turning away quickly. Liam smiled down at Seelie. âSeeing as how youâre waterborne, I thought you might like this.â
He uncovered the wrap and presented her with a small bowl of water with a silvery fish swimming around in it.â
Seelie squealed so loud, Leda thought her ears would burst.
âA fish!â Seelie cried in delight.
Liam put it on a table and Seelie scrunched down so she could watch the fish at eye level. He grinned at her. âDo you like it?â
âI love it. Itâs beautiful.â Seelie looked up at him, her eyes glassy with tears. âNo oneâs ever given me such a wonderful gift.â
He shrugged, scuffing the bottom of his boot on the floor. âItâs nothing. We have a drudge here whoâs waterborne. Heâs collected a lot of these fish from a nearby pond and I had him give me one so youâd have a familiar for yourself.â
âA familiar,â she repeated. âOf my own.â Seelie stood up and kissed Liam on the cheek. âThank you,â she whispered. A pink blush bloomed on her cheeks.
Knowing how shameless Seelie had been during most of this trip, it surprised Leda to see her so bashful around this young stud.
Leda walked over to the fishbowl and stuck her finger in the water.
âCareful, Leda! Donât boil the poor thing to death,â Seelie cried out in a panic.
